Ceramic Brain Cakes

My Brain Cakes series is based on my own brain imagery and experiments with traditional baking piping in ceramics. As I play with materials in unexpected ways, I lean into visual disruption and dialogue. Exploring tension of object and emotion, these “cakes” explore the many issues surrounding my recovery, including queer and gender discrimination in healthcare. These pieces are both healing offerings and critical narrative. Using delicate details in contrast with the solid nature of ceramic creates a juxtaposition of the strength of the brain to examine ideas of femininity/gender and trauma/healing. Ideas of identity, repair, and domesticity are found throughout my pieces.
