Vintage Vandal
This series is about disruption of the domestic. Ideas of domesticity are balanced with gestures of rebellion and vandalism. It attempts to blur the boundaries between old and new, historical and contemporary, fine art and craft, realism and abstract, conservative and liberal, public and private, feminine and masculine, sustainable and fashionable, asking the viewer to re-examine their understanding of and relationship with these ideas. These fabrics are dead stock reminiscent of 80s/90s florals of my conservative youth.
As a queer feminist artist, my conservative Catholic childhood of heteronormativity and chastity rings was at odds with my own beliefs and values. The juxtaposition of abstract, modern strokes, lines, and colors against traditional background themes and color palettes is like taking all of that conservatism of my youth and flipping it inside out, thus creating a new narrative. Reclaiming these fabrics is a personal and political statement.
